Mitte Attractions, Berlin

Checkpoint Charlie:

This historical checkpoint may now be a reconstruction of the original building – but the atmosphere remains. Checkpoint Charlie was once a famous crossing point between East and West Germany, and has since become a setting for many thriller novels. The checkpoint has been restored to appear as similar as possible to the original checkpoint, and so you can get an idea of what it was like to cross. There is also a Checkpoint Charlie museum nearby – a must-visit if you want to learn more about Berlin’s history.

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe:

This iconic memorial is one of the most popular attractions in Berlin, with visitors arriving from all over the world to pay tribute to the Jewish people who lost their lives during the Second World War. The memorial – an imposing and expansive collection of concrete slabs – is an incredibly confronting individual experience, but an incredibly important one for many visitors to Berlin. The memorial also has an underground information centre, providing exhibitions including the Room of Dimensions, the Room of Families, the Room of Names and the Room of Sites. The information centre is designed to strip away the anonymity of the murdered Jews, providing true stories of their persecution.

Brandenburg Gate:

Brandenburg Gate is an iconic symbol of Germany and one of the top attractions in Berlin. Once symbolising the division of the city, it now symbolises its unity and progress. The top of many visitors’ must-see list, Brandenburg Gate is a neo-classical marvel, and the nearby Pariser Platz garden square is a beautiful spot to sit down and reflect on Berlin’s history.
