About Central Park West

The buildings in this historic district were majorly built in the 1880s all throughout the 1930s after Central Park was developed. This was further enabled by the development of the Ninth Avenue Elevated which ensures easy proximity to the Lower Manhattan district. Row houses and tenements sprung up along the Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues which were previously Ninth and Tenth Avenues. More premium and luxurious buildings came up along the Central Park West location as well. Generally, the lot further away was actually Columbus Avenue and also its elevated railway. The development of the New York City Eighth Avenue Subway line in the 1920s also spurred the redevelopment process considerably.

The Central Park West Historic District was recognized at a federal level on the 9th of November, 1982. This was when it was integrated to the National Register of Historic Places. It was marked by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1973. The designation had an area with a T-shape that had a block of West 76th Street, two nearby blocks of the Central Park West location and a short area of West 77th Street. The commission extended local boundaries for the Central Park West-76th Street Historic District to cover all the locations within the boundaries of the historic district. The bigger Upper West Side-Central Park West Historic District covers the stretch between 62nd Street and 96th Street and also the portion between Amsterdam Avenue and Central Park West. The neighborhood has a fusion of late 19th and early 20th century décor and architectural themes and styles. The signature identifier is the Neo-Renaissance architectural style which is found all throughout the locality. Second Empire, Art Deco, Neoclassical architecture and Beaux-Arts styles cover multiple buildings. The Romanesque Revival Influence and Gothic styles can be found in fusion with several other design styles of the structures here.

The area inside this district houses several swanky high-rises and there are several Christian churches, multi-family homes, synagogue, New York Society for Ethical Culture, New York Historical Society and also the American Museum of Natural History. This residential area is situated alongside the best residential thoroughfares of New York City and it has multiple apartment buildings which are some of the earliest structures in the Big Apple. With the local boundary in 1990, there came about a more diverse and cosmopolitan theme for the neighborhood. The lovely skyline of the district is a particular feature along with diverse buildings and delightful streetscapes.
