Edinburgh is something of a paradise for history enthusiasts, with several famous heritage sites within its boundaries. Edinburgh Castle is a must for anyone visiting the city for the first time, the grounds of which contain several exhibitions and collections related to Scotland’s military history and offer spectacular views of the city. A stroll round old town also gives a good feel for the city, with numerous pubs and restaurants offering traditional fare. The Museum of Scotland is also a great idea for those looking to learn more about the country, as well as view its stunning natural history gallery.
As Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh features some of the country’s best shopping opportunities. Waverley Mall is in a central location and offers several famous brands across two levels, whilst Ocean Terminal is a modern waterfront mall with around 50 stores.
Much of Edinburgh is pedestrianised, especially the historic areas. Its narrow walkways and striking architecture make for a great place to explore on foot. Of course, there is also a comprehensive and reasonably priced bus service that covers the city and its surrounding areas, and West lothian buses also offer the Ridacard - which gives discounted fairs for those making multiple journeys.
Edinburgh Waverley rail station is a huge, 18-platform terminal that offers routes across much of Scotland and the wider UK. There are several services an hour running to Leeds, London, Glasgow, Plymouth and Aberdeen, as well as further routes to more remote destinations.
International visitors will be pleased to know that Edinburgh city airport is just a short ride away by dedicated tram service, with several buses also running concurrently.
Of course, the city is also exceptionally well served by private hire vehicles, which are a great solution for exploring the outskirts and places harder to reach by public transport.
