Scotland’s iconic capital is a wonder of architectural heritage, eclectic culture and wonderful culinary delights. Hugely popular with tourists from all over the world, it is a city to be explored and visitors may find themselves walking along fortress walls one minute, whilst enjoying cocktails in a contemporary bar the next.
With Edinburgh castle dominating the skyline atop the city’s own acropolis, the walls of the city are steeped in history and its unique cloister of alleys and passageways give this modern city an ambience of the medieval.
Of course, Edinburgh is also an important centre for business and commerce, with a consistently powerful economy that is the UK’s second behind London. as such, the city is a regular destination on the business circuit, playing host to numerous events, seminars and summits throughout the year.
Edinburgh is a major tourist destination and as such it has no shortage of accommodation options. Where you choose to sty will of course depend on your budget and the reason for your visit. Those visiting the city on business, or requiring accommodation for an extended period, may wish to consider renting a serviced apartment for added convenience and privacy. Not only do they offer an enhanced level of comfort, but they usually prove far more cost-effective than traditional hotels.

Edinburgh is something of a paradise for history enthusiasts, with several famous heritage sites within its boundaries. Edinburgh Castle is a must for anyone visiting the city for the first time, the grounds of which contain several exhibitions and collections related to Scotland’s military history and offer spectacular views of the city. A stroll round old town also gives a good feel for the city, with numerous pubs and restaurants offering traditional fare. The Museum of Scotland is also a great idea for those looking to learn more about the country, as well as view its stunning natural history gallery.
As Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh features some of the country’s best shopping opportunities. Waverley Mall is in a central location and offers several famous brands across two levels, whilst Ocean Terminal is a modern waterfront mall with around 50 stores.
Much of Edinburgh is pedestrianised, especially the historic areas. Its narrow walkways and striking architecture make for a great place to explore on foot. Of course, there is also a comprehensive and reasonably priced bus service that covers the city and its surrounding areas, and West lothian buses also offer the Ridacard - which gives discounted fairs for those making multiple journeys.
Edinburgh Waverley rail station is a huge, 18-platform terminal that offers routes across much of Scotland and the wider UK. There are several services an hour running to Leeds, London, Glasgow, Plymouth and Aberdeen, as well as further routes to more remote destinations.
International visitors will be pleased to know that Edinburgh city airport is just a short ride away by dedicated tram service, with several buses also running concurrently.
Of course, the city is also exceptionally well served by private hire vehicles, which are a great solution for exploring the outskirts and places harder to reach by public transport.
