Being just a short journey from several major towns, there is no shortage of attractions within easy reach of Hitchin. Those seeking more adventurous pursuits would do well to head into Milton Keynes, with its wealth of extreme sports and activities, whilst anyone planning a shopping trip would be hard pushed to find anything better than a trip into the capital.
However, for those looking to enjoy more relaxing activities, Hitchin has many features of its own. There are three theatres in the town: the Factory Playhouse, Market Theatre and Queen Mother Theatre, all of which offer a varied programme of shows throughout the year. The town also has an array of fantastic restaurants and traditional style pubs, catering to all manner of tastes.
The town centre also offers some excellent retail opportunities, with Churchgate shopping centre being home to several well-known brands and a few independent sellers.
As a reasonably compact and aesthetically pleasing town, Hitchin is a great place to be explored on foot. Many of the restaurants and shopping areas are within close proximity, walking or cycling is often the most convenient means of getting around.
Of course, the town is well served by buses - with routes into all the nearby towns, including a regular service to Milton Keynes and Bletchley. Most routes are covered by Plus Bus, with the exception of the shuttle services to Luton and Stanstead airports.
Hitchin is exceptionally well served by trains, with up to six services per hour running into London Kings Cross. The faster services reach the capital in under 45 minutes, with some as fast as 33 minutes. There are also regular direct services to Cambridge, Stevenage and Peterborough.
