Facts About Hong Kong Central 

The Chung Wan area or Central in English, was one of the Victoria City districts. The Central name gained prominence post the development of the MTR metro network in the 1980s. The connected Chater and Pedder stations were renamed as Central thereafter. 

Here are some interesting facts about Hong Kong Central: 

  • Central lies on Hong Kong Island’s northern shore. It is bordered by the Admiralty and Sheung Wan areas. 
  • The British landed on Sheung Wan Possession Point back in 1841 with the current-day Central zone selected for accommodating the administrative center and military facilities. 
  • The area drew Chinese and Western people who started settling and doing business here while the Canton Bazaar (the predecessor to Central Market) came up between Graham Street and Cochrane Street in 1842. 
  • Chinese residents were once limited to Sheung Wan with the core area being demarcated for Westerners. 
  • 1860-1880 saw the development of Theatre Royal, City Hall and other financial structures, making Central the hub of Hong Kong. 59 acres were added to its waterfront in 1904 under the Praya Reclamation Scheme. 
  • Central has seen numerous political movements over the years including the Occupy Central movement between 2011-2012 and Occupy Central with Love and Peace in September, 2014.
