What’s on in Jerusalem

Jerusalem is a truly unique location that is utterly steeped in history - in fact there can be few places worldwide that offer the sheer volume of historically significant sites as the city is a central location in the religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Jerusalem is a city of tradition, faith, and history, but also, increasingly, of modern culture and heritage - there are plenty of contemporary attractions, as well as a great selection of bars and cafes to enjoy some time soaking up the cities unique atmosphere.

Where to stay in Jerusalem

Jerusalem is a pilgrimage site that welcomes millions of visitors from around the globe each year. It therefore has numerous options for accommodation. However, if you are planning a longer stay, perhaps visiting on business, then it may be preferable to check into a serviced apartment - which can provide all the benefits of a hotel, such as room cleaning and reception, whilst also offering the convenience and flexibility of your own living space, such as secure access and kitchen facilities. Whether you are looking for a small studio or luxury apartment, the Squa.re offers a range of such properties to ensure we can match you with the right accommodation in Jerusalem.

What to do in Jerusalem

Of course, Jerusalem is a place that many people visit to see the historic sites of religious significance. The churches, temples and landmarks provide a fascinating insight into the development of most major faiths today and to visit them is truly a unique experience. Whatever your reasons for visiting the city, you are sure to find it a captivating and unforgettable place.

Many first time visitors choose to simply walk around the historic landmarks, either on a walking tour or self-guided. This not only provides a great way of tracing the steps of historical narratives, but also gives you a chance to experience the culture and atmosphere of Jerusalem.

There are also numerous excursions that can be arranged from the city - to more historical landmarks, areas of natural interest, or even other cities. Many of the tours are just one day long, so you can be enjoying a coffee in a Jerusalem cafe in the morning, walk amongst ancient fortresses or float in the dead sea in the afternoon, before being back in the city for dinner.

Tips for staying in Jerusalem

Places to eat

Jerusalem has a surprisingly diverse range of places to eat - from modern to traditional, local to global. To sample to local flavours, Eucalyptus is a traditional restaurant with a contemporary twist, whilst
Azura offers authentic home cooking. Mona is another great place which offers traditional kosher dishes in a stunning setting. Alternatively, for something a little more laid back there’s Jerusalem Bar and Kitchen which has a varied menu and often hosts live music.

Shopping

Alrov Mamilla Avenue is the best place for more familiar retail opportunities, with many high street brands represented, as well as a great selection of cafes. Downtown Jerusalem is also a great place for quirky shops and independent retailers. Of course there are also numerous markets in the city, with The First Station and The Machane Yehuda Market being amongst the most popular with the locals.

Attractions

Many of the big attractions in Jerusalem are inevitably linked to its biblical connections. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Western Wall, Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives are all major places for most visitors. There’s also the Tower of David - a medieval citadel on the site of forts dating back 2,000 years, which also houses  a museum of Jerusalem's history. For something a little different, there’s the Biblical Zoo - which houses animal species listed in the bible.

Transport

Jerusalem is covered by a bus service and light railway, which make it extremely easy to get around the city. Most of the bus routes operate out of the central station, with many overlapping - which means there are numerous options for making short journeys, it’s just a case of hopping on and off one of the green buses. The light rail is basically a tram system which runs between Mount Herzl and Pisgat Zeev.

Local Business

Jerusalem's economy is fuelled hugely by tourism, with service industries, including government, education, and  religion playing an important role. Financial service firms, such as Terra Venture Partners, Jerusalem Venture Partners and Bank of Jerusalem have their headquarters in the city, whilst the Jerusalem Technology Park is seeing the tech centre expand its presence in the region.
