If you thought the City was all suits and no soul, take a trip to Barbican. The cultural heart of this part of town unveils architecture, sights and live music, largely thanks to the Barbican Centre. Awash with classical concerts, art installations, indie cinema and more! The Museum of London is hugely popular, and the area is littered with upmarket gastropubs to cater for all-day dining, even at the weekend when the rest of the City shuts down. Marxist revolutionaries, ancient liveries, famous ghosts, the Artful Dodger and Oliver Cromwell - the Barbican area has a long and colourful list of ex-inhabitants! Today the Barbican centre takes up the bulk of the eastern area, and its days of radicalism (Lenin met Stalin at a pub here in 1903) have been replaced with trendy coffee shops and sleek architecture offices.
The Barbican Centre dominates the social scene and provides a wide variety of cultural experiences. Once you’ve finished gazing at the exterior, watch a film or a play, check out an exhibition, use the library or enjoy a classical concert at Europe’s largest performing arts centre. Shopping is also in abundance nearby, with Smithfield Market just a stone's throw from the station - it’s the largest wholesale meat market in the UK and one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Located within the Square Mile of the City of London it is housed in three listed buildings - packed with history there has been a livestock market on the site for over 800 years and yet is modern with its state of the art facilities for the receiving, storing and dispatching of meat and poultry.
Getting around the Barbican can be at times, a testing task. Thankfully, the stairs from Barbican tube station take you up onto the elevated walkways, from where a yellow line on the floor guides you to the arts complex. The station itself is within walking distance of many corporate offices - Farringdon, Angel and Old Street are all accessible, however due to Barbican being based on the Circle, Hammersmith and Metropolitan lines, you are in a prime location to reach all corners of London.
By being in such close distance for work and social events in the area, it’s little as to why it is such a popular places to stay in Barbican! Perfect whether you are visiting for a short period of time or wish to be based somewhere with active surroundings, yet easily commutable to the corporate setting of the City. All are spacious and fully furnished with tasteful and modern finishes - incorporating a complete kitchen and comfortable surroundings to relax in. All of our serviced apartments are never more than 400m from a tube station, so you’ll never miss any of the action!
