Dubbed ‘Queen of the Suburbs’ in the 1880s, Ealing straddled the border between city and country and provided a semi rural retreat for wealthy Londoners. Today its leafy streets and huge Victorian homes, coupled with good transport connections to central London and some of the best bars and restaurants outside the West End, mean that when it comes to looking for either a short term stays in Aldgate or a welcoming place to stay during and extended stay in London - Ealing is a welcome buffer between life in the urban jungle and rural bliss. Ealing locals have embraced the village way of life and formed a self contained community, with their own summer festivals, galleries and theatre and arts groups. Retaining a countryside charm, the area has resisted developers’ proposals to construct huge industrial blocks of flats.
Be sure to pay a visit to The Questors - it’s one of the largest amateur theatres in Europe with around 1,500 members, staging around 20 productions annually. After a show, pop into the lively theatre pub called the Grapevine Bar. For those with an artistic flair, then visit The Ealing Art Group - it welcomes new members of all artistic abilities and the OPEN Ealing centre has injected vitality into the Ealing arts community, with exhibitions and performances by established and up and coming artists.
Ealing has four Tube stations all in Zone 3. Ealing Broadway is at the end of the Central and District Lines, Ealing Common is on the District and Piccadilly Lines and North and South Ealing are on the Piccadilly Line, giving you fantastic links to central London and beyond. First Great Western trains from Ealing Broadway and West Ealing to Paddington take just 10 to 15 minutes, with the Heathrow Connect service getting you to the airport in less than 30 minutes. For those looking to take more scenic routes, there are currently proposals to build a Cycle Superhighway between Tower Hill and Acton!
