In the 1920’s the race was on to become the tallest building in the world. By 1930 the completion of the stunning Chrysler Building whose sparkling crown and automotive gargoyles exemplify the Machine Age, stole the title. 11 months later, at 443 metres in height the Empire State Building stole the accolade and held on to it for the next 40 years and whose observation deck today offers stunning views of the whole of Manhattan.
Three weeks after Times Square’s very own Subway Station opened in April 1904, the first electrified advertisement appeared. In the 20’s the buzz of bulbs lit the square and for a moment this place felt like the top of the world. Today, though bulbs have largely been replaced with HD screens; Times Square is a sight to behold.
