How do I check if I need a UK visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

Use the GOV.UK online tool to determine if your nationality and travel purpose require a UK visa or, from 2025, if an ETA is necessary—even for short visits

What’s the difference between needing a visa and needing an ETA?

A visa is required for long-term stays (study, work, family); an ETA will be required for short-term entry from certain countries starting in 2025.

What documents are required for a UK visa application?

Typically, you’ll need: valid passport, proof of funds, English language proficiency, sponsorship or university confirmation, health surcharge payment, and biometric submission. Some applicants may also need to show medical test results, such as for tuberculosis.
