Culture & shopping in Welwyn Garden City

The town is something of an attraction in itself, a vibrant centre combined with beautiful floral displays, tree gardens and award-winning parks, not to mention Welwyn Garden City’s annual World Food Festival. History enthusiasts will want to pay a visit to the Welwyn Roman Baths - fascinating remains from around 1,800 years ago. Outdoor lovers will enjoy Stanborough Park, which comprises two large lakes and 126 acres of award-winning parkland. There are nature walks and orienteering trails with maps, Vertigo Adventure’s high and low ropes course, angling, and a sailing lake.

There are also great leisure facilities in the town - including Hertfordshire’s only dedicated ice-skating rink, as well as a CW Entertainment, a premier entertainment venue with cinema, children’s entertainment centre, and a 320-seat theatre.

The Howard Centre is the place for shopping, located in the town centre with around 45 stores. The surrounding percent also has several other famous high street retailers, including John Lewis, New Look, and a large Sainsburys.

Getting around in Welwyn Garden City

As a garden city Welwyn is by nature say to navigate on foot. Most of the central amenities are within close proximity to each other and so public transport is not necessary. However, the town also features an excellent bus service, with routes around the surrounding areas as well as into Luton, St Albans and Stevenage.

From the railway station, there are around nine trains per hour into London during busy periods, with a journey time of as little as 28 minutes. There are also direct lines to Cambridge and  Letchworth Garden City, via Stevenage.

The town also has several taxi and private hire firms, offering reasonable rates for journeys to the surround areas that might be harder to reach by public transport.
