Oud Zuid translates to Old-South, and this is one of the city’s finest neighbourhoods. It’s filled with palatial homes, picturesque streets and upscale boutiques. The area was first developed more than a hundred years ago with the aim of making it a cultural hub for the rest of the city.
All the famous museums are nearby, including the Van Gogh museum. The city’s most popular park Vondelpark is located nearby. Several streets in this neighbourhood are home to haute couture boutiques and exclusive restaurants.
Museumplein is located nearby as are the world renowned Dutch diamond cutters and a number of restaurants and cafes that line the streets of this tranquil area. In fact, this is one of the most expensive parts of Amsterdam in which to live.

The neighbourhood was formed by merging the former areas of Amsterdam-Zuid, De Pijp and Zuideramstel a few years ago. PC Hooftstraat is the most exclusive street in the area and a must visit, even if only to indulge in window shopping. It is common to see premier brands such as Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Cartier, Chanel and more here.
Oud Zuid also has some delicious food shops including Tjin’s Toko, Duikelman, Brood, Firma Moes and De Turk. If you are curious to see what the area offers, just explore it on foot, as that’s how you will discover most of the hidden treasures of Amsterdam.
Travel around Oud Zuid by foot, or take a bicycle ride around the neighbourhood for a fun way to discover your surroundings. These are two of the most popular modes of transport in central Amsterdam. When you’re walking around the city, be sure to watch out for bikers riding past as they do have right of way. Bicycles are available to hire from numerous points in the city and come at a low cost.
