Facts About Vondelpark

Vondelpark was open to the public in 1865 as a leisure park, originally Nieuwe Park. Its name was changed in 1867 when a statue of Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel was situated into the park. • Every Kingsday or Koningsdag (formerly Queensday) in April, the park transforms into a children’s market or kindermarkt.
  • The Vondelpark received the status of rijksmonument or state monument’ in 1996.
