Facts About Docklands

Once known as the West Melbourne Swamp, Docklands has evolved drastically over time. Before this area started growing as an industrial and port town, it was a wetland area with a large salt lake and a giant swamp. Around the 1860s the development started here, however, by the 1900s Docklands became abandoned portland. Here are some facts about Docklands, Melbourne: 

  • In the 19000s Docklands development project was launched to improve this 500-acre area from a crumbling industrial port to a high-tech business hub with modern suburb features.   
  • The Colonial Stadium, which was the first major facility for sports and entertainment in Dockland was opened in 2000.
  • In 2007 Docklands became a part of the City of Melbourne Municipality. 
  • The famous Melbourne Star was opened to the public in 2008, however, due to some structural defects, it was closed and reopened in 2013.
