It may not be a secret as we all know a medieval Fortress on the east side of Paris that became famous in the 17th and 18th centuries. From studying history, we know that the French state prison and a place of detention for important persons charged with various offences were known as Bastille. Through various sources and proofs given by history, we know that this place was stormed by an armed mob of Parisians in the opening days of the French Revolution and it was a symbol of the despotism of the ruling Bourbon monarchy and held an important place in the ideology of the revolution. A grand and beautiful place, the Bastille with its eight towers which are 100 feet high linked by walls of equal height and surrounded by a moat more than 80 feet wide, this place dominated Paris. Finally, we get to know that on April 22, 1370, the first stone was laid on the orders of Charles V of France who had it built as a bastide or fortification against English attack. This place was originally a fortified gate. However, we must know that Charles VI turned it not an independent stronghold by walling up the openings. By 1557 its defensive system was completed on the eastern flank by the erection of a bastion. The 17th-century transverse block was built, dividing the inner Court into unequal parts.
