Facts About Cow Hollow

As the name suggests Cow Hollow was a green land watered by surrounding hills and small creeks which was used for cow grazing. The area also had a fisherman community as the shore was near to this area.

Here are some of the facts about Cow Hollow:

  • The first dairy in Cow Hollow was established in 1861. Followed by 30 others, soon this land was shared by hundreds of cows with wild ducks, quail, and rabbits. 
  • Besides milk, the area was also popular for laundry as freshwater was scarce along the Barbary Coast in the 1850s. 
  • The area is referred to as Laguna Pequeña on early maps but by the 1800s, tanneries, slaughterhouses, and sausage factories came into the place and Cow Hollow lost its charm. 
  • In the mid-1800s the popular Union Street in Cow Hollow was filled with hardware stores, garages, groceries, and laundries.
