Russian Hill is bordered by Nob Hill, North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf. It is also near Marina District and Cow Hollow. Ghirardelli Square lies at its northern foot, nestled along the San Francisco Bay Waterfront. Going down Columbus Avenue and Lombard Street will take you to the North Beach locality.

  • The name dates back to the time of the Gold Rush when settlers found a Russian cemetery on the hill. 
  • Russian merchant and naval ships frequented the area from the 19th century and crew members were reportedly buried in this cemetery. 
  • The cemetery was ultimately removed although the name of the hill remained intact. 
  • Views from the top cover several zones including Marina County, Bay Bridge, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge. 
  • Russian Hill houses the San Francisco Art Institute and the Academy of Art University.
