Chinatown is a part of the National Register of Historic Places listed under the Downtown Historic District of Washington DC. This is a part of Washington DC’s original Downtown which is one of the oldest areas in the city.

Here are some facts about Chinatown Washington DC:

  • The original Chinatown was located in the south of Pennsylvania Avenue around 1851. Later it was relocated to where today’s Chinatown is as the Federal Building was built there. 
  • In 1802, the city's primary public market was built on Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, which is now the site of the National Archives.
  • In the mid-1880s, there were approximately 100 residents in Chinatown which by 1936, became 800, including 32 families.
  • In the 1930s Chinatown was moved to the east of Downtown near Penn Quarter, which is known as Chinatown, Washington DC today.
