Montmartre neighbourhood is one of the most fascinating areas in Paris that is somewhat a unique village settled in the metropolis. Established in 1955, the neighbourhood is nestled on the highest point of Mont Martyr in the 18th arrondissement. During your short stay in Montmartre, experience the village like charm and the winding streets of the area. Here, you get to see many small attractions, which are more than mere tourist spots. The white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur on its summit is the highlight of this area and has a mix of everything that the French capital has to offer. This area delights tourists since it is worlds apart from the rest of Paris and offers the feeling of being in a magical village. Inside the sanctuary, the Sacré-Coeur, you will experience sombre atmosphere while outside. It's an ecstatic celebration of life. Quaint cafes, tiny galleries, old French bistros and street performances make Montmartre bold and timeless.
If you are keen to explore the artistic and bohemian heritage, plan to stay in Montmartre neighbourhood. Montmartre doesn’t have the grand boulevards, huge parks or bourgeois style expensive housing like central Paris but it has a unique charm, vibrant history and character that attracts visitors from all across Europe. Though small in size, the area offers many interesting sights for you to explore and dedicate an entire day of your extended stay in Paris in Montmartre. Discover Montmartre’s artistic heritage (in the works of artists like Kees van Dongen, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso), see the windmills converted into dance halls (specifically Moulin Rouge) and visit the Au Lapin Agile (a traditional French 19th cabaret venue) to get enchanted by the essence of “old France”. There are varied fresh food markets selling cured meats, lovely pastries and breads. You can also buy souvenirs for gifting, quirky handmade clothes and jewellery on the hilly streets or from the museums in this neighbourhood. Some of the good shops in this area are Isakin, Le Rideau de Fer and Fragonard, among others.
