Getting Around: Public Transportation and Driving

As often happens, if you’re someone moving to Dubai from Ireland, the USA or other countries, the transportation system may take some time to get used to. It was the same for me as well. What I found was that the transport system is contemporary and reliable in Dubai, although it’s a little different from what you originally thought! Here’s a breakdown:

  • Public Transportation: Dubai’s metro is highly efficient and covers multiple zones. You can download the RTA Dubai app to learn more about the best bus and metro routes for your daily commute. When it comes to taxis, there’s always Uber and Careem to rely on.

  • Car Ownership: Driving is a common affair for those living in zones with minimal public transportation facilities. The best part is that cars are comparatively more affordable than many other countries and the fuel prices are on the lower side (as is to be expected!). You can easily convert your home nation’s driving license (for those from eligible countries) or take a driving test to get your license.

    • The Palm Monorail does not use NOL cards and runs between Atlantis, The Palm and Al Sufouh Road. It has stops at several landmarks along the Palm Jumeirah (if you’re thinking of checking out this man-made marvel).

    • For e-scooters, check out Tier, Skurtt and Lime. Careem BIKE Dubai is an app for bike-sharing and rentals.

Many more good tips to move around freely in Dubai are mentioned in the guide, so download it for more guidance.
