Chapter 4

Moving to Singapore: Healthcare

Singapore's healthcare system is a mix of public and private services, known for its efficiency and high standards. Public healthcare includes major hospitals like Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH), and National University Hospital (NUH), which offer comprehensive emergency care and specialist services. Polyclinics provide primary care and routine check-ups, while specialist centres handle focused treatments for conditions like heart diseases and skin issues.

In the private sector, hospitals such as Mount Elizabeth, Gleneagles, and Raffles provide advanced treatments with shorter wait times. Private clinics offer general and specialized care, making healthcare more convenient and personalized.

For managing costs, Singapore offers various health insurance options: Medisave, a national savings scheme, covers hospital and certain outpatient expenses.

Health Insurance:

  • Medisave: Savings for hospital and outpatient costs.
  • MediShield Life: Basic coverage for large bills and some outpatient care.
  • Integrated Shield Plans: Extra coverage for private hospitals.
  • Employer Insurance: Often includes additional benefits.

Emergency Services:

  • Ambulance & Fire: 995
  • Police: 999
  • Non-Emergency Ambulance: 1777

In emergencies, dial 995 for ambulance and fire services or 999 for police. For non-emergency ambulance needs, call 1777.
