Accommodation Near Heartlands Hospital

About Heartlands Hospital

An acute general hospital located in Little Bromwich, just outside Central Birmingham, Heartlands Hospital has its origins in an infectious diseases hospital, known as City Hospital, that was completed in June 1895. Intended for activation only at times of medical emergency, the hospital was tasked with responding to an outbreak of typhoid fever in 1901, three years after which saw a nurse’s home and three additional pavilions added to the main site. During the First World War, the hospital treated patients with scarlet fever, diphtheria, measles and tuberculosis, and became a general hospital in 1953 (after joining the NHS in 1948). The hospital saw considerable expansion during the ‘70s, and was responsible for treating Janet Parker, the world’s last smallpox patient, in 1978. Renamed Heartlands Hospital in 1993, the hospital now provides high quality healthcare to residents of Birmingham and the surrounding area, treating thousands of patients every year across its various departments.
