The Loy Krathong Festival is one of Thailand's most beautiful annual celebrations, bringing rivers, canals and lakes to life with thousands of candlelit offerings. Celebrated across the country, the festival is particularly atmospheric in Bangkok, where locals and visitors gather along the Chao Phraya River to float decorated baskets, enjoy cultural festivities and welcome a fresh beginning.

In 2026, Loy Krathong falls on Tuesday, 24 November, coinciding with the full moon of the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar. From floating flower-decorated baskets to exploring illuminated riverside attractions, there are several ways to experience this much-loved Thai tradition in Bangkok.

Loy Krathong is an annual Thai festival during which people release small decorated vessels, known as krathongs, onto rivers, canals and other bodies of water. The name roughly translates to 'floating a basket', referring to the central tradition of the celebration.

Traditionally, krathongs are made using banana tree trunks and folded banana leaves, decorated with flowers and topped with a candle and incense sticks. People light the candle, make a wish and gently release their offerings onto the water.

The festival honours Phra Mae Khongkha, the goddess of water, and expresses gratitude for the water that sustains everyday life. Floating a krathong is also symbolic of letting go of past misfortunes, regrets and negative experiences while welcoming good fortune and a fresh start.

Loy Krathong takes place on the full moon of the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in November. In 2026, the festival will be celebrated on 24 November throughout Thailand.

Bangkok celebrates Loy Krathong with festivities centred around its waterways, particularly the Chao Phraya River. As evening approaches, residents and visitors gather along riverbanks, canals and designated public spaces to take part in the traditional floating ceremony.

Some of the highlights include:

Floating krathongs: People release small candlelit baskets decorated with flowers onto the water, often making wishes as they do so.

Traditional performances: Organised celebrations may feature Thai music, dance performances and cultural demonstrations.

Krathong-making workshops: Visitors can learn to make traditional floating baskets using banana leaves and other natural materials.

Riverside celebrations: Hotels, restaurants and shopping destinations along the Chao Phraya may organise special dinners and festival experiences.

Illuminated riverfronts: Bangkok's riverside temples, historic landmarks and attractions create an atmospheric setting after sunset.

The celebrations take place across different parts of the city rather than at one central venue. Visitors can choose between public festivities, temple-side gatherings and organised riverside events. Specific activities and access arrangements depend on the venue's programme.

The Chao Phraya River is one of the most atmospheric settings for experiencing Loy Krathong in Bangkok. Several riverside attractions and public spaces are worth considering when planning an evening around the festival.
The following locations have featured in previous Bangkok festival celebrations or offer a riverside setting. However, visitors should check the latest 2026 announcements before travelling, as the final list of participating venues and designated krathong-floating areas may differ from previous years.

1. Chao Phraya River and Wat Arun

Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is one of Bangkok's most recognisable riverside landmarks. Its distinctive architecture, illuminated after sunset, creates a beautiful backdrop for the festival.
The surrounding riverfront is worth exploring for its traditional atmosphere and views of the Chao Phraya. Visitors should check the temple's opening arrangements and any special festival access information before visiting.

2. ICONSIAM

ICONSIAM is a popular riverside destination combining shopping, dining and entertainment. Its River Park overlooks the Chao Phraya and has hosted dedicated Loy Krathong celebrations in previous years, including traditional ceremonies and environmentally conscious krathong-floating activities.
It is worth checking ICONSIAM's 2026 announcements for its festival programme, timings and any special visitor arrangements.

3. Asiatique The Riverfront

Asiatique The Riverfront combines a riverside promenade with restaurants, shops and entertainment. Its location along the Chao Phraya makes it an appealing option for visitors who want to enjoy an evening by the water alongside dining and shopping.

The destination has featured in previous Bangkok riverside festival celebrations. Check its latest announcements to see whether special Loy Krathong activities are scheduled for 2026.

4. Santichaiprakarn Park and Rama VIII Bridge

For a more relaxed riverside setting, the area around Santichaiprakarn Park and Rama VIII Bridge is worth considering. Located along the Chao Phraya, the park offers views of the river and the illuminated bridge.

Bangkok's public parks have featured in previous Loy Krathong celebrations, including designated areas for floating krathongs. Check the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's 2026 announcements to confirm participating parks, opening hours and permitted activities.

5. Other Bangkok Public Parks

Several public parks in Bangkok have previously opened their lakes and ponds for Loy Krathong celebrations. These offer an alternative to the busy riverside venues and can provide a more relaxed setting for the traditional floating ceremony.

However, not every park permits krathong floating, and the participating locations can change each year. Check the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's latest list before choosing a park.

If you still have time on your hands, you can plan to spend a day at the beach.

Loy Krathong vs Yi Peng: What's the Difference?

Loy Krathong and Yi Peng are two distinct Thai celebrations that often take place around the same full moon in November. Although they are frequently grouped together as Thailand's Festival of Lights, their traditions and cultural origins are different.

Loy Krathong is celebrated throughout Thailand and involves floating decorated baskets on rivers, canals and lakes. It is associated with paying respect to the goddess of water and letting go of past misfortunes.

Yi Peng, meanwhile, is traditionally associated with Northern Thailand and the Lanna cultural tradition. It is particularly well known in Chiang Mai, where illuminated paper lanterns, decorative displays and traditional ceremonies form part of the celebrations.

The main differences are:

Loy Krathong: Celebrated throughout Thailand, with floating candlelit baskets as its central tradition.

Yi Peng: Traditionally celebrated in Northern Thailand, with illuminated lanterns and Lanna cultural customs.

Krathongs: Small decorated vessels released onto water during Loy Krathong.

Khom loi: Paper sky lanterns traditionally associated with Yi Peng.

In 2026, Chiang Mai's municipal Yi Peng celebrations are scheduled from 23 to 25 November, overlapping with Loy Krathong on 24 November. Visitors should be aware that sky-lantern releases are restricted in Chiang Mai's Mueang district for safety reasons. Do not assume that lanterns can be released freely across the city; any permitted releases must follow local regulations and authorised event arrangements.

Choosing the right neighbourhood makes it easier to enjoy the festival and explore Bangkok. These five areas offer different advantages:

Riverside: Best for river views and easy access to the Chao Phraya celebrations. Look around Charoen Nakhon or hotels with shuttle boats to nearby piers.

Bang Rak and Charoen Krung: Ideal for boutique hotels, riverside dining and access to Sathorn Pier, with the BTS nearby.

Old Town (Rattanakosin): A good choice for staying close to historic temples, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. Boutique hotels and guesthouses are common here.

Silom and Sathorn: Silom and Sathorn are great for visitors who want a central base, plenty of restaurants and convenient BTS and MRT connections.

Sukhumvit: Best for first-time visitors seeking a wide choice of hotels, shopping, nightlife and reliable public transport, although the riverfront requires a separate journey.

For festival night, prioritise a stay near your chosen celebration venue or a convenient transport link.

What to Expect When Visiting Bangkok During Loy Krathong

If you are planning a trip to Bangkok around Loy Krathong, a little preparation can make the experience more enjoyable.

Arrive early: Popular riverside locations become crowded in the evening, so reach your chosen venue before sunset.

Choose natural krathongs: Look for baskets made from banana leaves, banana trunks or other biodegradable materials instead of foam.

Check event arrangements: Organised celebrations, hotel dinners and river cruises may require advance reservations or paid entry.

Plan your transport: Expect busy roads and crowded river piers. Use the BTS, MRT or river transport where convenient.

Dress appropriately: Wear modest clothing when visiting temples and follow local guidance at religious sites.

Respect the waterways: Avoid littering and follow instructions from event organisers when floating your krathong.

Thailand's Ministry of Culture is also promoting environmentally responsible celebrations in 2026. Its guidelines encourage people to use natural materials, reduce festival waste and follow the 'one family, one krathong' approach to limit the environmental impact on waterways.

Visitors should also look out for Vijit Chao Phraya 2026, a separate riverfront light-and-sound event taking place from 13 November to 13 December 2026. Organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the event will illuminate landmarks and historic locations along the Chao Phraya River with creative lighting and visual displays.

Although it is separate from Loy Krathong, its dates make it another attraction for visitors exploring Bangkok during the festival period.

Experience Loy Krathong in Bangkok in 2026

Loy Krathong offers a wonderful opportunity to experience Thailand's cultural traditions, from candlelit offerings on the water to lively riverside celebrations. With the Chao Phraya providing a beautiful backdrop and additional light displays taking place across the city, Bangkok is an excellent destination for experiencing the festival.

If you are planning to visit, arrange your stay and travel in advance, particularly if you want to stay close to the riverfront and enjoy the celebrations without spending too much time commuting.

FEM EMEA Summit 2026: Key Global Mobility Insights

This October, I had the pleasure of attending the FEM EMEA Summit 2026 in London. For those not in the know, Forum for Expatriate Management (FEM) is a leading community for global mobility professionals, bringing people together through conferences and summits around the world. The conversation at this most recent summit covered a lot of ground, but three themes remained consistent: a more complex relocation industry, the practical role of technology and the weight of security, risk and compliance.

Challenges in the industry

The industry is facing increasing complexity, changing client expectations and pressure to deliver better solutions for relocations.

It was evident from the discussions that some businesses are reconsidering physical relocation, moving local employees vs. international, or are adopting more remote working and other alternative strategies.
The pressure is not felt equally everywhere. For the Middle East and Africa, a 56% decline in the relocation industry was mentioned, which can be attributed to the war. It is a reminder of how quickly external events can reshape demand.

High volume, low research requirements are also proving difficult for some providers, particularly where processes rely on manual work or have single points of failure.

Technology simplifies, but there are still hurdles

Technology was a recurring theme throughout the event, and there is a clear appetite for smarter systems, better integration and more efficient processes. The main message that stayed with me was that technology should simplify the process, not create additional barriers.

This matters because some corporate clients have strict security policies that prevent assignees from accessing certain technologies, such as Meta platforms and WhatsApp. A solution that works in theory, but not in practice for the assignee, isn’t a real solution.

Integration is the opportunity

Around 60% of corporate clients were reported as looking for integrations that simplify their processes, although they may be unwilling to pay the additional cost. Relocation management companies (RMCs) want better data connectivity, but many are unsure where to start. Providers who can offer a clear, practical route into integration will be well positioned.

AI and data hygiene

The discussion on AI was grounded. It can help with data storage and analysis, but figures and outputs must be checked carefully before they are shared with clients. All of this depends on good data. Data needs to be accurate, consistent, current and properly managed; otherwise, AI will simply produce faster versions with the same problems.

At TheSquare, we are already working on data connectivity and integration with one of our RMCs. I see it as a practical starting point for a repeatable solution that we could offer to other relocation management companies and their corporate clients.

Security, risk and compliance

Risk and compliance featured repeatedly in both the presentations and the discussion groups. Three points stood out.

Assignee security is critical, but access still matters: Technology solutions must meet corporate security requirements without preventing employees from accessing the services they need.

Compliance is client-specific: Requirements differ from one corporate client to the next. It isn’t enough to rely solely on an RMC’s own compliance processes. We need to consider the unique requirements of each client and show that we understand those differences.

Importance of duty of care: Regular communication and clear records through case updates help ensure that assignees receive appropriate support throughout their relocation. At TheSquare, we already have this in place through our case update tools.

What I’m taking away

The industry has real challenges, but the direction is clear. Clients want simpler processes, better-connected data and confidence that risk is being managed properly. The providers who do well will be those who build technology around how assignees and corporate clients actually work, and whose compliance thinking goes beyond the minimum.

If you are an RMC or corporate client thinking about integration, data quality or client-specific compliance, we would be glad to talk.

Email our relocation team at relocation@thesqua.re or corporate services at corporate@thesqua.re to discuss the specific needs of your global mobility programme.

How Changing Consumer Trends Affect Hospitality

Consumer behaviour changes have had a profound impact on the entire hospitality industry in recent times. From evolving social norms to technological advancements and changing aspirations, various trends are reshaping the way people travel and stay.

Guests no longer view accommodation as merely basic shelter for their stay. Today, guests come with a plethora of expectations, reflecting their recent behavioural shifts.

1. Experiential Travel Takes Center Stage:

Modern travellers seek more than just a place to stay; they desire immersive experiences that enhance their journey. Whether it's engaging in authentic cultural activities, participating in hands-on workshops, or embarking on adventure-driven excursions, guests expect memorable encounters that go beyond traditional accommodation.

To meet this demand, accommodation providers are innovating by crafting experiential offerings within their properties. By fostering local partnerships and embracing cultural authenticity, they are creating unique opportunities for guests to connect with their surroundings and create lasting memories.

2. Workcation: Redefining Travel Norms

The convergence of work and leisure, popularly known as "workcation," has gained momentum in 2024. With remote work becoming the new norm, travellers are blending business with pleasure, seeking destinations that offer both productivity and relaxation.

Accommodation providers are catering to this trend by offering remote work-friendly amenities, high-speed internet access, and designated workspaces, transforming traditional hospitality offerings to accommodate the needs of the modern digital nomad.

3. Tech Integration Transforms Guest Experiences

The integration of advanced technologies continues to revolutionise the hospitality landscape in 2024. From AI-powered chatbots and IoT-enabled room controls to contactless check-ins and virtual concierge services, technology is enhancing guest experiences while streamlining operations. Mobile booking platforms are gaining traction, allowing guests to seamlessly book and manage their stays on the go. Accommodation providers are investing in tech-driven solutions to meet evolving guest expectations for convenience, personalisation, and safety.

4. Sustainability Steers Consumer Choices

One of the most interesting consumer behaviour changes pertains to a marked preference for more sustainable hospitality choices. The industry is responding to this new segment of environment-conscious travellers with eco-friendly properties that offer a lower carbon footprint, energy conservation, waste reduction and other sustainability-related measures. Going forward, environment-friendly properties could find more favour amongst a bigger section of customers.

5. Micro-Travel Trends

Short, spontaneous getaways and weekend escapes are favoured by consumers seeking frequent doses of relaxation and exploration. What's notable is their inclination towards staying in local accommodations, such as apartments, rather than exclusively opting for premier brands and big-city hospitality properties. Moreover, there's a growing preference among guests to steer clear of crowded zones, seeking secluded retreats for a truly rejuvenating experience.

In response to these evolving preferences, businesses offer flexible booking options, enticing last-minute deals, and crafting curated experiences tailored to short-stay guests. Not only can they maximise occupancy, but also seize revenue opportunities in a dynamic market landscape.

6. Social Media's Influence on Travel Decisions:
Social media platforms wield immense influence over travel decisions in 2024, shaping perceptions, inspiring wanderlust, and driving booking behaviours. Accommodation providers are leveraging social media channels to showcase their offerings, engage with audiences, and amplify brand visibility. Through a blend of user-generated content, strategic influencer collaborations, and compelling storytelling, they craft immersive digital experiences that entice prospective guests, transforming virtual engagement into tangible bookings.

EcoGrade Advantages: Sustainable Benefits for Environment

TheSqua.re has always been a pioneer in the global hospitality industry, offering the finest serviced apartments across a plethora of locations for guests. The brand has now expanded into a revolutionary sustainability programme that will reshape the contours of the industry in the near future. With NetZero legislation on the anvil for businesses, smaller companies and enterprises are choosing to make voluntary commitments in recent times. According to a Booking.com report, 73% of travelers also prefer more environment-conscious accommodation options and this has led to the entire industry shifting towards sustainable sourcing, renewable energy, and greener practices.

The EcoGrade Sustainability Programme from TheSqua.re marks the beginning of a new shift in the global hospitality industry. Apartment suppliers can now showcase sustainability scores for their properties. EcoGrade makes the sustainability assessment procedure simpler for travellers, offering clear and transparent ratings, irrespective of the source of power or location, and building a crucial benchmark in the serviced apartments segment. This sector does not currently have a benchmarking initiative which is otherwise crucial due to its nature of functioning. EcoGrade aims at being a one-stop solution for understanding sustainability within the bigger spectrum of serviced apartments.

TheSqua.re has unveiled EcoGrade with a purpose as outlined above. Here are some of the biggest benefits for customers.

Top Benefits of EcoGrade for Our Customers

1. Customers can stay ahead of the curve

With carbon reporting and NetZero commitments, customers can ensure that they are already ahead of the global shift towards sustainable and environment-conscious accommodation while travelling. This will help them contribute towards eco-friendly travel while limiting their energy usage simultaneously.

2. No additional charges

EcoGrade is meant to disseminate information transparently to customers on energy usage and sustainability scores. They do not have to worry about paying any fees for the service.

3. Being part of a continually growing community

Customers can join the EcoGrade community to be a part of a rising global trend. Serviced apartments are more sustainable than conventional hotels and with the community growing rapidly, customers will also be growing alongside with access to more exiting and new innovations in this segment throughout the coming years.

4. Clarity across key data points

EcoGrade collects vital data that helps measure the impact of its serviced apartments upon the environment. This is done by evaluating four key categories, namely energy efficiency, energy consumption, green energy suppliers, and green transportation. The methodology combines several aspects to provide customers a thorough understanding of the environmental impact of their stay. EPC experts and Government-approved data are also analyzed for more accurate conclusions in this regard.

How EcoGrade Works

EcoGrade has already won the Achievement in Sustainability for Accommodation Providers award at the Business Travel Awards Europe 2023. This demonstrates its commitment to making a difference in a global tourism industry that reportedly contributes 8% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide and where accommodation contributes 30% of this tally. The pioneering tool leverages AI and tracks various parameters to offer scores for every unit which enables customers to take carbon-conscious accommodation decisions while booking.

Recent EPC reports are analyzed for understanding energy efficiency, evaluating aspects like insulation, heating, and lighting. Energy consumption is analyzed through KWHm² (average energy usage per metre squared) as per the EPC predictions. This figure is also improved wherever possible with actual readings from meters. The higher the energy efficiency and lower the energy consumption, the more environment-friendly the apartment unit. Energy suppliers of apartments are also assessed by looking at electric, gas, and other utilities and also whether they are provided by companies who deliver on net zero carbon emission promises. While new apartments are onboarded, there is a switch made to green energy suppliers by TheSqua.re. Proximity to green transportation forms is also evaluated for apartments, including access to eScooters, bike sharing programs and other public transportation.

Summing up, it can be stated that EcoGrade builds a much-required benchmark in the serviced apartments and hospitality sector. It enables customers to take environment-conscious and informed decisions while choosing accommodation, while switching to a mindset where limiting the environmental impact of each stay is the preferred choice. Being a part of the EcoGrade community also offers an opportunity to get ahead of the curve and embrace sustainability in its truest form while traveling.

6 Reasons Your Business Should Start Its Sustainability Journey

In the current globalized world countries are focusing on achieving net zero carbon emissions for travel, We can see some of it being implemented in terms of SAF( Sustainable Aviation Fuels). Tourists in 2024 are more willing to travel with the lowest carbon option available.

Here are the Top 6 Reasons Why Your Business Should also Begin its Sustainability Journey

1. Customer behavior changes

Change management and sustainability go hand in hand. A higher number of consumers now care about sustainability. Deloitte’s Sustainable Consumer Research highlights how 85% of UK customers adapted to a more sustainable way of life during 2021 while 1/3rd look for sustainable businesses while purchasing. Ethical consumerism is on the rise with bigger markets shifting towards these approaches and lifestyles. They look for carbon reporting and NetZero commitments from businesses along with progress on other SDGs and overall energy efficiency among other factors.

The purchasing power of Gen-Z and millennials, while having increased, is more tilted towards sustainable products, policies, and businesses. Many customers are now willing to pay higher prices for sustainable products and the trend is expected to increase. Companies that adhere to environmental regulations, use renewable resources, and have sustainable supply chains will automatically build competitive advantages due to this changing consumer mindset. For instance, when it comes to choosing a property to stay during a vacation, new-age consumers are looking up more sustainable options like EcoGrade serviced apartments that help them get a picture of their energy consumption during their stay along with ensuring a minimal carbon footprint overall.

2. Rise in sustainable initiatives and global regulations

There has been a steady rise in sustainability initiatives for tackling social issues and protecting the environment. The SDGs (sustainable development goals) were adopted by more than 178 nations in 1992 in the form of Agenda 21. They highlight the need for business success in building a more sustainable future for the world. Governments across the globe are already taking initiatives towards ensuring sustainability across the spectrum while several regulations have been introduced that directly impact businesses. For instance, April 2019 saw the UK Government unveiling new emission and energy rules where large companies have to report on their annual greenhouse gas emissions and energy use in their annual reports. By 2021, the Government in the UK had already set a target of lowering emissions by a whopping 78% by 2035.

Information disclosure through carbon reporting and other sustainability reporting is also on the rise along with sustainable certification like Global GAP, Rainforest Alliance, and Fairtrade. These trends make it imperative for businesses to latch onto the sustainability bandwagon at the earliest. Carbon reporting, for instance, now allows businesses to stay resistant to future risks and legally compliant while avoiding fines and penalties.

3. Growth in sustainable finance

Given that most businesses require or will require external investments for future innovation and growth, sustainable finance cannot be ignored any longer. The growth in sustainable financing models means that a larger section of investors are considering ESG factors while deciding on investments. According to Edie, global green finance has grown to $540 billion in 2021 from $5.2 billion in 2012.

4. Sustainability comes with higher profits and cost savings

Adopting sustainability goals may help your business reap the benefits of higher cost savings and profits in the long run. McKinsey has reported how adopting such practices may lead to cost reductions and profit boosts up to 60 pc. Companies with higher ESG ratings have the highest profitability. While there is an initial cost of boosting sustainability across the business, it will ultimately lead to reduction in unnecessary wastage, recycling and reuse of materials, and lower operating costs throughout the manufacturing process. Water and fossil fuels will also keep becoming costlier and more limited. Energy prices are also forecasted to keep rising. Hence, energy efficiency and sustainable ways of production and working with renewable sources and behavior changes will safeguard resources while helping businesses earn higher profits.

5. Sustainable businesses attract the best global talent today

Companies with a focus on sustainability may be the ones attracting top talent in the future. The Fast Company held a survey where 40 pc of millennials selected to work for companies based on their commitments towards sustainability. Millennials make up the largest portion of the workforce and are unwilling to work for companies that do not adhere to regulations and use unsustainable and toxic production methods. Millennials, according to this survey, are also okay with getting lower compensation while working for companies that care about sustainable growth.

6. A sustainable approach enhances brand image and competitive advantages

With more consumers favoring sustainable businesses over their regular counterparts, adopting a sustainable approach will not only bring you a competitive advantage in your space, but also boost your brand image. A firm commitment towards sustainability and caring about environmental issues will get you newer customers whose values sync with yours.

However, keep in mind that your business should walk the walk when it comes to implementing sustainable strategies and measures. Once you start properly marketing your initiatives, more customers will recognize your work and you will be able to pave the way for long-term growth and prosperity.
