More about Gold-coast, Chicago

Facts About Gold Coast

Gold Coast, as the name suggests, is one of the most upscale neighbourhoods in the country. However, this area was swampy land and not a desirable location until the 1980s. The Gold Coast neighbourhood was grown after the Great Chicago Fire.

In 1875, the Chicago Lake Shore Drive was developed and this gave a boost to the real estate of this place. In the late 80s, a merchant named Potter Palmer, now famously known as the owner of Palmer House Hotel and Marshall Fields & Company bought land in this area and built his mansion. This huge mansion with 42 rooms filled with art and paintings and 26 servant’s rooms was spread across an entire block. The Palmer Mansion was demolished in 1950 and now you can find two highrises standing in that area.
