Facts about Kew 

Before Melbourne was established, this area was inhabited by the local people known as Wurundjeri. During the 1840s European settlers named this place Boroondara which means “place of shade” in the local Woiwurrung language. The name Kew was given to this place in 1851 by one of the purchasers of Crown Land, named Nicholas Fenwick. At that time Melbourne was known as Richmond and he named the place Kew (similar to Kew in England close to Richmond). This place got popular during the 19th century and became one of the most popular suburbs of Melbourne.
