Facts About Charlestown

Charlestown is the oldest Boston neighborhood and was originally known as Mishawum as called by the Massachusett tribe. It lies on the peninsular near the Charles River, right across from downtown Boston beside the Boston Harbor and Mystic River waterways. Charlestown was laid out by engineer Thomas Graves in 1629.

Here are some more interesting facts about Charlestown:

  • The establishment took place during the reign of Charles I of England and it was the first capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 
  • The area turned into a city by 1848 and was annexed on 5th January, 1874, by Boston, shifting to Suffolk County from Middlesex County. 
  • The original English settlers of the peninsula were Thomas and Jane Walford who received a grant from Sir Robert Gorges, arriving at Mishawum in 1624. 
  • The first Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony dispatched Richard, William and Ralph Sprague for laying out the settlement and Thomas Walford negotiated with the local tribe. 
  • Charlestown was originally a Puritan English city in the Colonial period and John Winthrop’s Company stopped here in 1630 prior to settling at Boston across the Charles River. 
  • Charlestown is known for its Freedom Trail which commemorates the iconic Battle of Bunker Hill in the American Revolutionary War. 
  • The iconic USS Constitution was launched in 1797 and is the oldest U.S. Navy commissioned vessel and the world’s oldest warship that still lies docked at the Charlestown Navy Yard. 
  • Paul Revere started his midnight ride from Charlestown during the Battles of Lexington and Concord. 
  • The Warren Tavern opened in 1780 and is still functional. 
  • The Constitution Yacht Charter is also located nearby in Boston Harbor.
