Central London is in easy commuting distance (15 mins Victoria or London Bridge) and it's also very convenient for Gatwick airport with fast trains taking just 15 mins from East Croydon. There is a also a good tram system, which connects Croydon to Wimbledon. And it has a very good shopping area centring around the pedestrianised High Street and the Whitgift centre.
There is also an Ikea and Wing Yip oriental supermarket and other out of town stores on the Purley Way, just 5 mins away by road if you have transport. For entertainment, there is a cinema complex on the Purley Way plus 2 other cinemas in the centre of town, along with numerous bars and restaurants.
